Tuscany in autumn

13 November 2025

Step-by-Step - Level

Last month I was with a small group in Tuscany. The autumn colours were the best I'd ever seen and the light at that time of year was either soft and golden, or hazy with smoke from cozy fires and with storm clouds brewing, both so lovely for painting.

The region was so inspiring and so very sketchable. At first glance 5 days of painting seems like a lot, but the days whizz by as the sketchbooks fill and I've got a long list of scenes from the trip I still want to paint. This is one of them - the view from our bedroom window.

I've done this scene as a sketch, not a painting. It's in the loose style I would use if I was painting there, on location. Even though it's a sketch there's a lot to explore in this scene - capturing light, different types of trees and bushes and a stone building.

So join me in Tuscany, and let's sketch this scene together.

Happy painting!
