Here’s a true story. A number of years ago I did a solo sketching trip to Venice. It was heavenly. I had 3 days and I walked and sketched and walked and sketched.

Before I arrived I made myself a rule to be back at my accommodation before dark every night. But the first evening I got lost and before I knew it I was completely dark. When I came to a car park, I knew I really had taken a wrong turn. They are no cars in Venice!

Just then I was met by a couple of young college girls who took pity on me and kindly walked me all the way to the bus station. The kindness of strangers.

So I have seen Venice at night and the domes and canals lit by the stars is lovely. In this lesson we paint a very simple Venice silhouette against a dark starry sky.
