Red poppies

23 May 2024

Step-by-Step - Level

All along the roadsides at the moment are so many spring wild flowers. Every year, it's the red poppies that especially bring joy. So the other day I stopped and took a number of photos. I particularly liked the ones with the fences in them, because it felt interesting to combine a hard manmade element to compliment the freedom of the flowers.

I also thought I'd show you a different way to reserve whites. In this lesson we use little pieces of torn tape to mask out a few of our feature flowers. You don't need to be overly accurate with this, and you can carry tape with you for outside sketches too, so it's a good trick to try.

Happy painting!
