Old town in ink

6 June 2024

Video - Level

Here's the view from our bedroom window of some of the old buildings in our little mountain town and the church steeple. It's full of character, lovely angles and textures.

In this lesson I'm going to show you how you can make quick little sketches with very minimal materials - just one brush, one pen and a little sketchbook. This is perfect if you're heading outside and don't want to carry a lot of equipment.

There are two things I forgot to say in this video...

  • I used hot pressed paper for this sketch, but any watercolour paper will work. So don't worry if you don't have hot pressed paper.

  • Many inks are not archival. Unlike artist quality paints, inks often fade over time (especially if exposed to the sun). So check the details from the manufacturer of your ink if you plan on doing sketches in this way and framing them. In a sketchbook you don't need to worry about fading.

Happy painting!
