painting table mountain (free lesson)

Watercolour painting of Table Mountain, Cape Town
A Free Watercolour Lesson: Painting Cape Town with DeepDeepLight

I have a treat for you today — a free painting lesson over on the DeepDeepLight YouTube channel, and I'd love you to come paint along with me.

We're painting one of South Africa's most iconic views - Table Mountain in Cape Town. I was just in the Cape a few weeks ago, exploring some our favourite haunts and visitng family. We only had one day in Cape Town itself - we saw this view at night, and then the next morning the cloud the mountain was under it's famous table cloth. But I've seen this view often enough that I can paint it from memory. It's so disctinctive.

In the lesson I show you my travel palette — how I've set it up, which brushes I pack, and how I choose colours to match a specific location rather than just reaching for the same set every time. That last part matters more than people realise, especially when you're sketching on the road.

The subject gives us a beautiful range of things to work through together: sky, sea, mountains, rocks. And I'm particularly excited about the granulating watercolours in this one — they do such interesting things when you let them settle, and I walk you through how to make the most of that.

The lesson is filmed in real time and at a pace you can genuinely follow along with. No skips, no sudden jumps to a finished piece. Just painting, step by step.

If you'd like to explore the Deep Deep Light range for yourself, I have a discount code for you: RENEELIGHT. I used their paints for all my travel sketching on my recent holiday and they're genuinely lovely to work with, especially for travel sketching.

Happy painting!
